Most books on best-seller lists appear for a few weeks at most, but Clan of the Cave Bear held its place for eight months, selling millions of copies worldwide and putting Auel in the company of Stephen King and Anne Rice, two of the most popular writers of the 1980s. And she did it with one book, Clan of the Cave Bear (1980). No contemporary Oregon writer has achieved the superstar celebrity status of Jean Auel. ![]()

![]() ![]() A cynical self made man (who happens to be a butcher’s son), he’s strong and broad shouldered but with the love of his life Annabelle he’s so protective and passionate! I may not have liked him much on my first read but the second time I read the book I cursed myself for not paying proper attention the first time. I don’t know how Cat resisted his proposal so much when I would have said yes a hundred times over even before he proposed me! With his humorous nature he tries to hide his true intense passionate self and God I adore him for it!!ĥ. Simon Hunt (Secrets of a Summer Night) ![]() ![]() I never thought Leo could be on this this list when I read Mine Till Midnight but he redeemed himself so well and just wormed his way into my heart. And it does not make me twisted in any sense. ![]() I love how jealous he is of others when Maddy smiles at them. The lead actor and director of the Capitol, Logan might appear strict but he’s adored by everyone. Although this is not one of the most famous books, this happens to be one of my favourite ones! And Logan is such a sweetheart when (he’s not insecure). But damn, Lisa Kleypas has got some majorly hot and amazing heroes and narrowing them to seven was super difficult! I struggled a lot with my options as I couldn’t decide whom I wanted more on the list. I think this was the most difficult post I’ve EVER done till date. ![]() ![]() ![]() Smith's art, in fact, expands upon his previous waggery to include increased interplay between characters, and even more of his intricate detail work. Grade-school irreverence abounds in this compendium of (extremely brief) fractured fairy tales, which might well be subtitled ``All Things Gross and Giddy.'' With a relentless application of the sarcasm that tickled readers of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Scieszka and Smith skewer a host of juvenile favorites: Little Red Running Shorts beats the wolf to grandmother's house the Really Ugly Duckling matures into a Really Ugly Duck Cinderumpelstiltskin is ``a girl who really blew it.'' And, with the latest in the cycle, Lucy By the Sea (her ninth novel and fourth Lucy Barton book) about to come out, we still don’t know whether the cycle is closed or ongoing. ![]() She now appears as the wife of the title character from Oh William! (Strout’s eighth novel, her third Lucy Barton book and currently shortlisted for this year’s Booker Prize.) So who is Lucy Barton? And does it matter about the way these books fit together and the order in which they should be read?Īccording to her interviews, Strout herself does not seem to have conceived the phenomenon now unofficially known as ‘the Lucy Barton story cycle’ with a plan in mind. ![]() Lucy first appeared in My Name is Lucy Barton (her fifth novel, the first Lucy Barton book and Booker longlisted in 2016). If you haven’t been with Elizabeth Strout from the beginning – since Amy and Isabelle in 1998 (her first novel) – then you could be forgiven for being a little confused about Lucy Barton and her place in Strout’s work. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then he shouts, “Lazarus, come out!” And the man who has died comes out (John 11:43–44). ![]() Martha cautions him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days” (John 11:39). When Jesus comes to Lazarus’s tomb, he is deeply moved again, and he commands that the stone be taken away. We pick up Rebecca’s chapter near the end of her commentary on the story of Mary, Martha, and the raising of Lazarus from the dead (John 11). That seems to be true both in the natural world and in our individual and corporate lives. Yet the Bible shows us a God who works powerfully in and through suffering to draw us to himself. They wonder how God’s creation could be called good (as it repeatedly is in Genesis 1) if death has always been a part of life on this planet and occurred long before humans were around to sin. Just as the presence of so much suffering in the world can be a stumbling block to people considering the Gospel, suffering and death are also a reason why many Christians struggle to accept an old earth and evolution. The excerpt below comes from Chapter 11: “How could a loving God allow so much suffering?” She tackles a dozen of the hardest objections to the faith, including the claims that Christianity is anti-science, misogynistic, and homophobic. Rebecca McLaughlin, who was featured at our 2019 conference and who has guest hosted a couple of our podcast episodes, released a book, Confronting Christianity (Crossway, 2019). ![]() |
